 For the estimated 1.4 million Canadians living with osteoporosis, many of which are not getting enough vitamin D, an innovative new treatment is now available containing both bone-building medication and vitamin D. A new medication called FOSAVANCE®, containing both FOSAMAX® and vitamin D is taken once a week, to help prevent fractures of the hip and spine. Recent studies found that more than 60 per cent of Canadians with osteoporosis had inadequate Vitamin D levels and, 97 per cent of patients hospitalized with a fracture from a minor fall had inadequate vitamin D. Getting the necessary amount of vitamin D can be difficult for Canadians due to insufficient sun exposure, a key source of vitamin D. It's very difficult for most people to meet their Vitamin D requirements through diet alone. Most people, in fact, need a supplement in order to meet their adequate levels. Fortified cow's milk, fortified soy milk, and fortified orange juice are all good sources. But again, without a supplement, it's very difficult to hit optimum levels.
A recent study at Rutgers University suggests that women can help maintain a healthy urinary tract by drinking one glass of cranberry cocktail twice a day. Proanthocyanidins or condensed tannins in the cranberry prevents bacteria from adhering to the bladder and the benefits of drinking a glass of cranberry cocktail starts within two hours and can last for up to 10 hours. Cranberries are packed with vitamin C to help protect your immune system. There are a variety of ways to get cranberry health benefits; Toss some tangy, sweetened dried cranberries into yogurt, cereal, muffins and salads. Add extra flavor to grilled salmon, chicken and pork with cranberry sauce. It’s easy, it’s fun and it tastes great!

Cardiovascular disease is a serious health threat, and treatment for high blood pressure and other risk factors for heart disease and stroke like high cholesterol is crucial in lowering heart attack and stroke. The first pill to treat high blood pressure and high cholesterol at the same time is now available in Canada. Caduet is the first treatment to address multiple risk factors for cardiovascular disease and it combines Norvasc, a treatment for high blood pressure, and Lipitor, a cholesterol-lowering therapy. The benefit to patients is that their chances of having a heart attack or stroke are much reduced beyond what one would expect by just treating the hypertension alone, or each of the individual risk factors alone.
